John Terry has hit back at the critics who have called for England captain David Beckham to be dropped for Sunday's clash with Ecuador.

The Real Madrid midfielder has taken the brunt of the criticism for England's poor showing in the 2-2 draw against Sweden and a number of high-profile pundits, including Sir Geoff Hurst, have claimed it is time for him to be replaced by Aaron Lennon.

Terry strongly disagrees with that point of view and insisted Beckham's performances have been crucial to England's progression to the last 16 at the Word Cup finals.

"I think Becks is doing very well. It really does surprise me all the talk," said the Chelsea central defender.

"It's easy to single Becks out because of the player he is, as high profile as he is.

"Sometimes the team doesn't play well and he's the one singled out. It's not fair at all.

"He's playing very well and all the goals have come from Becks. His play and passing have been fantastic so far."
