Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin has been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup finals due to a thigh injury.

The 26-year-old forward had to be substituted late on in the second round clash with Switzerland and team spokesman Igor Mirochnichenko confirmed that Voronin's injury was more serious than was first thought.

He said: "Andriy is distraught that the World Cup is over for him."

Voronin had earlier been looking forward to the challenge of a quarter-final against Italy.

"I cannot put my joy in words," Voronin commented. "You cannot describe what is happening back in Ukraine.

"We have nothing to lose, just two matches to go and then we are in the final. It's all happening very quickly."
