England striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that he hopes to enjoy as long and as successful an international career as Brazilian superstar Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has become the leading goalscorer in World Cup finals in Germany, notching his 15th goal in the 3-0 win over Ghana to surpass Gerd Muller's previous mark of 14.

That has left Rooney to hope to have a similar impact in years to come, while he has also defended fading France legend Zinedine Zidane against some strong criticism.

"I hope I can do what Ronaldo has done for Brazil in my career," Rooney said. "He has been one of the best players over the last ten years."

"I also thought Zinedine Zidane was brilliant for France against Spain.

"I would like to have a long career like him, but you never know what is going to happen in football.

"He and Ronaldo have had some criticism at the World Cup, which is embarrassing because they are both world-class players. They are unbelievable."
