England hope to have Gary Neville and Frank Lampard available for Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against Portugal as coach Sven-Goran Eriksson bids to gain the upperhand over his counterpart Luis Felipe Scolari.
Scolari coached Brazil to victory against England in the quarter-finals of the World Cup finals four years ago before guiding Portugal to a penalty shootout success against Eriksson's side at Euro 2004.
Lampard twisted an ankle in training on Thursday, but appears to have escaped any serious damage and is expected to take his place in a five-man midfield.
Neville has recovered from the calf strain that forced him to miss the last three matches and is ready to play in Gelsenkirchen. He replaces Owen Hargreaves at right-back with the Bayern Munich man reverting to the holding midfielder role in place of Michael Carrick.
Portugal have a doubt over Cristiano Ronaldo who missed training on Friday with a thigh injury. The Manchester United star had to be substituted in the first half of the 1-0 victory against Holland after being caught on the thigh by Khalid Boulahrouz.
Scolari will definitely be without Deco and Costinha who are suspended after being sent off against the Dutch. Luis Figo is expected to move into Deco's role in central midfield while Simao Sabrosa will play one the left wing with Armando Petit replacing Costinha.
Eriksson is looking forward to the match and hopes for an improved England performance after their uninspiring displays in the tournament to date.
"We all know we can play better football, but in the four games we've played we've shown that we're getting better and better," said the Swede.
"The best will come, I'm quite sure about it."
