FIFA have decided that no Germany players will face disciplinary action as a result of the brawl that followed their World Cup quarter-final victory against Argentina.

Players and officials from both sides were involved in an unseemly scuffle after the hosts secured a 4-2 success in the penalty shootout that followed a 1-1 draw.

Leandro Cufre, a non-playing substitute for Argentina, is facing a heavy punishment after referee Lubos Michel showed him a red card for his part in the fracas, with photos in the German press suggesting he felled Per Mertesacker with a kick.

Argentina forward Maxi Rodriguez is also being investigated by FIFA's disciplinary committee after appearing to attack Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Video footage of the melee is still being considered, but FIFA spokesman Markus Siegler confirmed: "No German players will be sanctioned, but a further assessment is being made with regard to officials of both teams."

That could be bad news for Oliver Bierhoff, a member of Germany's coaching team, who was at the centre of the disturbance.
