Franz Beckenbauer has urged Jurgen Klinsmann to continue as Germany coach despite the hosts' dramatic World Cup semi-final defeat against Italy.

A series of poor results in friendlies meant Klinsmann's popularity was low going in to the tournament and Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as both player and coach, was among his many critics.

However, Germany's exciting displays at the finals won over the detractors and Klinsmann is now certain to be offered an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of the month.

Beckenbauer said: "I really hope Klinsmann will continue. He left a big influence on this team, the players trust him.

"You can't say that Italy were two goals better, but they were more clever. The German team played well, but Italy deserved to be in the final."

Klinsmann, who has previously expressed an interest in moving in to club football, was non-committal when asked about his plans.

"My own situation is not the most important thing right now," he said, after the 2-0 loss against Italy.

"I need some time to let all of this sink in and some time to speak to my family."
