The brilliant Brazilian right-back Carlos Alberto just edged out a determined challenge from France's 1998 World Cup winner Lilian Thuram and fellow countryman Cafu in our straw poll for the right back slot.
As Brazil's skipper in the quite wonderful World Cup winning side of 1970, his goal in the 4-1 final victory over Italy was pure South American magic and a sure contender for the 'Goal of the Century'.
His surging runs down the right flank were a joy to behold and nine goals in 74 national appearances were testament to his attacking abilities. His natural instinct to push forward from defence is now synonymous with Brazilian football and has spawned generations of full-backs in the same mould, such as Roberto Carlos, Cafu and, more recently, Real Madrid star Cicinho.
