A veteran of five successive World Cup campaigns, the great German schemer Lothar Matthaus earned his place in our World Cup elite - ahead of the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Zico and Bobby Charlton - for the sheer determination in midfield that every successful side needs.
Previously a more than capable midfield playmaker, Matthaus relied on his vast experience and aging legs to dictate affairs from deeper in a sweeping capacity in the latter part of his career.
From a goalscoring midfielder to a defensive organiser, the most capped player in German history led his country to World Cup triumph in 1990 and took over the mantle of Franz Beckenbauer in the attacking sweeper's role the Germans have made their own.
After that glorious night in Italy, he was named European Player of the Year, and in 1991 became the first ever World Player Of The Year. At club level he won almost everything there was to win, but he will be best remembered for his performances for his country, making a record 25 appearances in World Cups.
