The most controversial figure in our team is also the most talented. Diego Maradona's World Cup odyssey began in 1982, and while he showed flashes of undoubted genius (scoring twice against Hungary in the first round), he also managed to get sent off for kicking an opponent in a defeat to Brazil.
Four years later, he was the best player in the world by a mile, and became the most famous player in the world because of the two goals he scored against England in the quarter-final against England. The second was one of the best World Cup goals ever scored, but the first was the infamous 'Hand Of God' goal, where Maradona punched the ball past Peter Shilton.
In the final against West Germany, he did not find the net, but turned in a typically masterful performance, setting up the winning goal. However, it was downhill for Maradona after that, despite taking Argentina to the final in 1990. His off-field troubles seemed to be starting to take their toll on his game, and they lost a bad-tempered final 1-0 to the Germans.
Four years later, he managed to lose some excess weight for the World Cup in America, and began the tournament well, seemingly turning back the years. However, when he failed a drugs test, he was kicked out and his career was effectively over. Despite these woes and the weaknesses of his character, Maradona's immense talents make him an obvious choice for any World XI.
