Pele
The greatest player of all time? Certainly you would get few arguments if you try to make that case in a Brazilian bar, and if there is any player in the history of football who has symbolised The Beautiful Game, then it is Pele.
He came into the World Cup aged just 17 in 1958, and helped Brazil win the trophy for the first time in their history. Despite his tender years, he scored a hat-trick in the semi-final win over France and then managed two more in the final, where they beat the hosts Sweden 5-2.
Unfortunately, injuries hindered his participation in the next two World Cups, but Pele had one last triumph in 1970. Playing despite having 'retired' from the tournament four years earlier, he scored the opening goal in the final and inspired Brazil onto a famous 4-1 win over Italy.
Skillful, powerful, elegant and iconic, there have been few players to have made such an impact on the game as Pele, who scored 77 goals in 91 appearances for his country and has been an ambassador for the sport ever since. A legend in Brazil and everywhere else in the world, no World Cup XI would be complete without him.
