Gerd Muller
Muller didn't have the skills of Pele or many other World Cup legends, but he was arguably the greatest goal-poacher of all time. He won his first call-up soon after the 1966 World Cup final defeat to England, and was soon the key part of a West German side that would rule the world.
In 1970, they fell short, losing 4-3 to Italy in the semi-finals (having gained revenge over England in the previous round), but Muller scored an incredible 10 goals in the tournament, including two successive hat-tricks in the group stage.
Four years later, having been top-scorer in the 1972 European Championships, Muller only scored four goals, though they were certainly crucial ones, including the winner in the final as West Germany beat Holland 2-1. Incredibly, at the age of 28, he retired from international football after that game.
While his style of play was not particularly colourful, Muller's statistics are simply awesome. He played 62 times for his country and scored 68 goals, with 14 goals in 13 World Cup matches making him the tournament's all-time top scorer. 365 goals in 427 games for Bayern Munich helped them win three European Cups in his time there.
