Valencia midfielder Ruben Baraja and Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes were notable absentees as Spain coach Luis Aragones announced his 23-man squad for the World Cup finals.
Aragones instead handed calls to Barcelona's Andres Iniesta and Baraja's Los Che team-mate Carlos Marchena.
"I have chosen players who can play in a system rather than if any particular player is on form," Aragones explained.
"I know there are good players who have been left out, but I have chosen players on form and on the way they play."
