Valencia midfielder Ruben Baraja and Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes were notable absentees as Spain coach Luis Aragones announced his 23-man squad for the World Cup finals.

Aragones instead handed calls to Barcelona's Andres Iniesta and Baraja's Los Che team-mate Carlos Marchena.

"I have chosen players who can play in a system rather than if any particular player is on form," Aragones explained.

"I know there are good players who have been left out, but I have chosen players on form and on the way they play."

Squad

Goalkeepers: Casillas (Real Madrid), Reina (Liverpool), Canizares (Valencia).

Defenders: Puyol (Barcelona), Salgado (Real Madrid), Ramos (Real Madrid), Marchena (Valencia), Del Horno (Chelsea), Lopez (Atletico Madrid), Ibanez (Atletico Madrid), Juanito (Real Betis).

Midfielders: Albelda (Valencia), Alonso (Liverpool), Joaquin (Real Betis), Fabregas (Arsenal), Iniesta (Barcelona), Xavi (Barcelona), Senna (Villarreal).

Strikers: Reyes (Arsenal), Villa (Valencia), Torres (Atletico Madrid), Raul (Real Madrid), Luis Garcia (Liverpool).
