Ukraine captain Andriy Shevchenko is hoping to be given the all clear to participate at the World Cup finals later this week.
The AC Milan striker damaged knee ligaments during a Serie A game against Parma on May 7 and has still not been able to resume training.
He used the lay-off to take a holiday but has now returned to Milan to have the injury assessed by club doctors.
"My health is improving with each passing day," said Shevchenko.
"I cannot push my treatment forward too quickly, and nor do I want to. You must not rush these things.
"Doctors will examine me (on Wednesday) and things will become clear on my plans and my hopes for the World Cup."
The 29-year-old is also expected to announce whether he has decided to leave Milan in the next few days, with Chelsea desperate to sign him.
