Japan coach Zico has called Teruyuki Moniwa into his World Cup squad as a replacement for the injured Makoto Tanaka.
Jubilo Iwata defender Tanaka, 30, was expected to be a member of Japan's starting line-up for their Group F opener against Australia on June 12, but a hamstring problem means he will take no part in Germany.
Moniwa, 24, currently plays his club football for FC Tokyo but is short of senior international experience.
He started all three matches during Japan's disappointing 2004 Olympic games campaign, but was an unused member of the squad at the Confederations Cup the following year.
