Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has called Mineiro into his World Cup squad after Edmilson was ruled out with a knee injury.
The Barcelona midfielder took a knock to his right knee during training on Monday and a subsequent MRI scan revealed damage to the meniscus, which will not heal in time for him to play any part in Germany.
A statement on the Brazilian Football Federation's official website read: "After a meeting between the coaching staff, the team captain Cafu and Edmilson at the Thermoplan Stadium, Edmilson was told he has been removed from the Brazilian squad that will play in the World Cup in Germany."
The 29-year-old was a key figure for the Selecao when they won the World Cup in 2002 and would have gone into this summer's tournament in good form, after his quietly effective displays helped Barca to complete the Primera Liga and Champions League double.
His replacement, Mineiro, is a defensive midfielder best known for scoring Sao Paulo's winner against Liverpool in the final of the 2005 FIFA Club World Championship.
