Paraguay's veteran striker Jose Cardozo has accepted that his international career is over after a calf injury ended his hopes of bowing out at the World Cup finals.

The 35-year-old had been expected to be the spearhead of Paraguay's attack in Saturday's opening Group B clash against England, but his place has now been taken by Dante Lopez, who plays his club football in Italy with Genoa.

Cardozo said after being forced out of the summer showpiece: "I had hoped to play in these finals and then retire from international football after the World Cup.

"It is very sad for me."

However, better news for Paraguay coach Anibal Ruiz came with Roque Santa Cruz declaring himself fully fit after knee problems.

"I am looking forward to this game," the Bayern Munich forward commented.

"England are a very strong team with great players, but we believe in ourselves and we have worked hard and prepared well.

"I am fit and we are ready to do our best against England. We want to make our country proud of the team."
