Costa Rica defender Gilberto Martinez will miss the rest of the World Cup finals after suffering a leg injury in the opening game 4-2 defeat by Germany.

The Brescia stopper damaged a tendon in his left leg in the clash in Munich and had to be replaced midway through the second half, with a scan confirming Martinez's worst fears.

Ticos coach Alexandre Guimaraes commented: "Gilberto is out because we studied the situation and determined there is no chance he will recover in the next ten days.

"Gilberto, with the bravery we all know he has, admitted the situation and agreed to leave the team."

The player himslef added: "As the game progressed I started to feel the pain.

"This has been one of the most difficult decisions in my career."
