Iran have asked for permission to replace full-back Sattar Zare in their World Cup squad after he damaged ligaments in his right knee during a training session.
The Iranian medical staff were initially optimistic about the Bargh Shiraz star's chances of playing in the team's Group D opener against Mexico, but after further tests it was decided he would need several weeks to recover fully.
Teams are allowed to call up a replacement for injured players if they provide FIFA with medical evidence at least 24 hours before their opening match kicks off.
Pas right-back Hadi Shakoury is the man in line to join the squad if FIFA agree to Iran's request.
