Iran are likely to be without talismanic striker Ali Daei when they attempt to kick-start their World Cup campaign against Portugal on Saturday.

The 37-year-old, who has netted 109 international goals, was unable to train on Monday because of a back problem, despite completing the full 90 minutes of Sunday's 3-1 defeat against Mexico.

Coach Branko Ivankovic said: "Ali Daei did not train today because of a back injury. I think it is very hard for him to play against Portugal. We have to see but I don't think he can play."

Ivankovic was more upbeat about Ali Karimi's participation, even though an ankle problem restricted the Bayern Munich midfielder to light exercises during Monday's training session.

"Karimi's injury is the old one and he has had problems with it but I think he will be okay for Portugal," said the Croatian.
