Italy coach Marcello Lippi slammed his players after they were held to a 1-1 draw by nine-man USA.
The Azzurri finished the match with 10 men following the dismissal of Daniele De Rossi, but after the USA lost a man either side of half-time, an angry Lippi felt his players should have capitalised.
"I'm disappointed and angry," said Lippi. "We didn't go into this match in the right frame of mind.
"We paid for that with the nervous way we played and with the mistakes we made."
Speaking about the first-half dismissal of De Rossi, he added: "I didn't see Daniele's foul but when I saw it on the replay I thought the decision was right.
"I'm sorry because he's a really good kid but he's made the umpteenth stupid mistake."
USA captain Claudio Reyna admitted it was a draining experience to play with nine-men.
"We gave everything, but it was difficult after the second red card," he admitted.
"It's now very simple, we have to win (the final game). We have a super chance now."
