Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira was happy with his side's display as the five-times champions overcame a spirited Australia side 2-0.

The Brazilians struggled to hit any great heights during the game but second-half goals by Adriano and Fred confirmed their safe passage into the last 16 of the competition.

Parreira said: "We are happy to have qualified. It's a deserved win. We imposed both our style of playing, passing the ball around, and also imposed ourselves physically.

"It is true that with three Australian forwards in our half it was more complicated, and we struggled at times but overall I think there are more positives than negatives.

"It is normal that we are not in top form. We only played three friendlies before the finals and we are getting better and better little by little.

"We played better than we did against Croatia and we will play even better in the next one (against Japan)."

Australia striker Mark Viduka said: "It's very disappointing not to get something out of the game but Brazil are Brazil and we gave them a good game," he said.

"We played well and on another day it could have been different for us."
