Swiss end Togo hopes

Togo's World Cup hopes ended after they slipped to a 2-0 defeat against Switzerland in a scrappy game in Dortmund.
The build-up to the match was dominated by a threat by the Togo squad to go on strike in protest about unpaid bonus payments.
A last-minute deal was agreed to ensure the game went ahead and the Sparrowhawks produced a spirited display, but it was not enough to keep their debut finals campaign alive.
A well-worked goal from Alexander Frei gave the Swiss the lead just after the quarter-hour mark and the impressive Tranquillo Barnetta made certain of the points two minutes from time.
The result saw Switzerland climb to the top of the Group G table and they now need only a draw against South Korea to secure a place in the last 16, but on this showing they are not good enough to go further than that.
Togo had the better of the opening exchanges, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Abdel Kader causing real problems to the Swiss defence, with Phillippe Senderos in particular struggling.
Against the run of play, Switzerland went ahead when Barnetta knocked back a deep cross from the left for Frei to turn the ball home from close range.
It was a well crafted goal, but it would not have been possible without some of Togo's defenders failing to pick up their men.
Togo reacted well and put the Swiss under real pressure, but poor finishing meant goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuhler only had routine saves to make.
Ten minutes before the interval the Sparrowhawks should have been awarded a penalty when Adebayor was tripped by Patrick Muller, but mystifyingly the referee decided it was a fair challenge.
The incident seemed to damage morale among the Togo players and their attacks after half-time lacked the pace and directness of the opening 45 minutes.
Switzerland took advantage of the Sparrowhawks' lack of ideas to take control of proceedings.
Half-time substitute Hakan Yakin and Frei both forced Kossi Agassa into saves, before Barnetta secured the points late on.
Substitute Mauro Lustrinelli's first contribution to the game was to roll the ball across the edge of the box for Barnetta to fire in to the far corner and end Togo's hopes of a last 16 place.
