Paraguay down Soca Warriors

Read Bill Borrows every day during the World Cup on 4thegame - you know it makes sense!

Trinidad & Tobago's World Cup adventure ended with a 2-0 defeat to Paraguay in Kaiserslautern.
An own goal from Brent Sancho and a late Nelson Cuevas strike sent the Soca Warriors home without the scoring the goal they craved and deserved.
Going into the game Trinidad & Tobago still had a chance of making it into the last 16 but were relying on England to beat Sweden and their strikers scoring a few goals.
Paraguay were playing for pride, hoping to prove some critics wrong and that they were unlucky in their previous two games.
The Soca Warriors began brightly with a number of free-kicks causing problems for the Paraguay defence.
Dwight Yorke sent the ball into the box on four minutes. The delivery was met by Cornell Glen whose powerful header was straight at goalkeeper Aldo Bobadilla. Moments later Aurtis Whitley sent a half-volley inches over the crossbar.
Paraguay took their time in making chances before Nelson Valdez twice came close in as many minutes. Both opportunities were close-range headers but the striker failed to get a clean contact on either and both sailed wide of the post.
That should have provided a warning to Trinidad & Tobago but on 25 minutes they went behind in unfortunate circumstances. A Roberto Acuna free-kick on the left of the box was flicked on by Julio Dos Santos only for Gillingham defender Sancho to head past his own 'keeper and into the net.
The wind was knocked out of the Soca Warriors and they were lucky not to fall two behind when Denis Caniza scored, only for it to be ruled out thanks to a very late flag from the assistant referee who spotted a handball in the build up.
In the second half Trinidad & Tobago came out determined to score. Wave after wave of attacks were cleared by the resolute Paraguay defence.
Most of the inspiration came from Port Vale's Chris Birchall and ex-Manchester United player Dwight Yorke who bossed the midfield and dictated play. However, it was Carlos Edwards on the right, with his pace and trickery, who provided the spark they needed.
On 61 minutes Edwards broke clear but his dangerous cross missed everyone in the box. It was the same story on 64 minutes with no-one for Trinidad & Tobago willing to take a gamble in the penalty area.
As the game progressed it became clear that despite their huge effort Trinidad & Tobago were not going to make the breakthrough. Even the 38-year-old Russell Latapy couldn't find a way to goal, sending a fierce half-volley over on 77 minutes.
Paraguay confirmed the victory with four minutes remaining. A neat one-two on the edge of the box with Roque Santa Cruz left Cuevas with a chance he coolly converted.
They had the heart and determination but unfortunately for Trinidad & Tobago that's not enough at the World Cup finals and the dream is over. Paraguay move above them in Group B to restore some pride but it's an early trip home for both these sides.
