Iran and Angola have both been eliminated at the group stage as they played out a less than entertaining 1-1 draw in Leipzig.

Neither team could make a breakthrough during the first 45 minutes but it was Iran, with nothing but pride to play for, that looked the more composed as they carved out the best chances.

Their first came on 14 minutes as Ferydoon Zandi saw a smart shot turned away by Joao Ricardo in the Angolan goal.

The chance of the half fell to Ali Daei 10 minutes later. Some good work down the right saw a cross swung into the Iranian box where Daei had beaten the Angolan offside trap. But Iran's all-time top scorer got right under the ball and planted a free header well over the bar.

He has netted 109 goals in 147 international games and it's doubtful that he'll get a better chance to make it 110!

Angola then began to stamp more authority on the game but their front play was disjointed and they couldn't create any meaningful chances as both teams went in level at half-time.

The second half started in the same vein as the first, with Iran playing the better football, but it was Angola that opened the scoring on the hour.

The Black Antelopes attacked down the right-hand side and the ball was worked out to Nsimba Ze Kalanga who hit a deep cross into the Iranian box.

Amado Flavio lost his marker on the edge of the six-yard-box and steered a header past Ebrahim Mirzapour in the Iranian goal.

Angola then took control of the game and, with Mexico trailing to Portugal, were looking to find another goal to take them a step closer to the second stage.

But, despite some good possession, their front play was poor and it was Iran who found the net next. A corner was swung across the six-yard-box and Ferreira Joao Ricardo tried to collect the ball but missed it completely.

That left the goal open for Sohrab Bakhtiarizadeh to plant a header in at the unmanned far post.

Iran then took control of the game and looked the hungrier of the two teams. But, for all their possession, the best they could offer was a few long-range shots that were stopped by Joao Ricardo in the Angolan goal.

So the game finished 1-1 and both teams have been eliminated at the expense of Portugal and Mexico. On this display it's doubtful that either will be missed greatly!
