Alan Shearer insists he has not been approached by the Football Association to join England's coaching team after the World Cup finals.

Incoming England boss Steve McClaren reportedly wants Shearer and Terry Venables as his assistants when he succeeds Sven-Goran Eriksson next month.

The ex-England and Newcastle United captain retired at the end of last season and is planning to take a year out before embarking on a coaching career.

However, Shearer admits an offer to work with the national team would be tempting.

Shearer told BBC1's Match of the Day: "I have no idea where this has come from. It's news to me.

"Obviously it would interest me in the future. It's very flattering but I've not heard anything."

It is believed FA officials back the plan to bring in Shearer, as he is a popular figure with both England players and fans.

However, the FA's director of communications, Adrian Bevington, said: "Any plans Steve McClaren may or may not have will not be discussed publicly until after the World Cup.

"Sven is the current England manager and our full focus of attention is with him at the moment."
