AS Roma defender Leandro Cufre is another member of the Argentina squad to have made his name at the FIFA World Youth Championship. Cufre was one of the stars of the 1997 tournament in Malaysia when the Albiceleste beat Uruguay 2-1 in the final to lift the trophy. He then enjoyed an impressive spell in the Argentinian domestic league with Gimnasia La Plata and, after making his senior international debut in 2000, moved to Roma in 2002. It took him some time to adapt to Italian football and he was loaned to Siena for the 2003-04 season, but the 27-year-old's excellent form since returning to the Stadio Olimpico has enabled him to force his way back into the international reckoning.
