A member of Argentina's 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship winning squad, Pablo Aimar has failed to live up to the hype that saw him dubbed 'the new Diego Maradona'. The creative midfielder made his senior international debut in 1999 and was a member of the side that disappointed at the 2002 World Cup, but his inconsistency means he is no longer a guaranteed starter. Aimar's early promise saw him move from River Plate to Valencia in a 24 million euros deal in 2001 and he helped Los Che win the Primera Liga title in 2002 and the Primera Liga-UEFA Cup double in 2004. However, injuries have blunted the 26-year-old's extravagant skills and he is no longer considered one of the leading players in Spain.
