Roberto Abbondanzieri has consistently reproduced his impressive club form on the international stage over the past two years to establish himself as Argentina's number one goalkeeper. The 33-year-old moved from Rosario Central to Boca Juniors in 1997 and has since helped the Buenos Aires giants to secure 13 domestic and international trophies. His consistent displays were rewarded with an international debut in the goalless draw against Paraguay in June 2004 and he performed well enough to retain his place in the team for that year's Copa America, where Argentina lost to Brazil on penalties in the final. The arrival of Jose Pekerman as coach has not changed Abbondanzieri's status as first-choice shot-stopper, despite strong challenges from German Lux and Leonardo Franco.
