The 27-year-old Melbourne Victory striker lays claim to the most number of goals scored in a single international. Thompson netted an astonishing 13 in a 31-0 thrashing of American Samoa in a World Cup qualifier in 2001. One of few members of the Socceroos set-up to still play his football in Australia, Thompson did try his luck in Belgium with Lierse, but decided to return home after struggling with a series of injuries. Made his international bow in February 2001 in a 3-2 defeat to Colombia.
