Midfielder Jan Polak finally began to fulfil some of his early promise during the World Cup qualifying campaign and could be one of the Czech Republic's danger men in Germany. He made his full international debut as an 18-year-old in a 2-1 defeat against Poland in 1999 but, after winning a second cap the following year, he had to wait five years for a third, during which time he amassed 46 appearances for the Under-21s. Polak marked his senior international recall with a goal in a 3-0 friendly victory against Slovenia, before scoring four times in 10 outings during the qualifiers. At club level he had spells with FC Brno and Slovan Liberec before making a 1.5million euros move to Bundesliga side Nurnberg in 2005.
