Despite his advancing years Karel Poborsky remains a key figure for the Czech Republic. A tricky winger in his youth, he made his international debut in a 4-1 victory against Turkey in February 1994 - the Czech Republic's first match following the break up of the former Czechoslovakia. He went on to make his name with a stunning goal against Portugal in the quarter-finals of Euro 96, and also appeared in the 2000 and 2004 European Championships. Although now playing the game at a more sedate pace, he won his 100th cap in a friendly against Greece in August 2004 and featured regularly during the World Cup qualifiers. Poborsky's skills have graced Manchester United, Benfica, Lazio and Sparta Prague, but in 2005 he returned to Ceske Budejovice, where he started his career, as player-chairman.
