A colourful character, Villafuerte still faces an anxious wait to see if he is first choice for coach Luis Fernando Suarez in Germany this summer. Was a regular starter during qualifying, but changed clubs earlier this year to make sure of regular action, having lost his place at Barcelona to Jose Cevallos. Now plays his domestic football for Deportivo Quito. Missed out on selection four years ago before coming to prominence at the 2004 Copa America.
