The Liverpool midfielder has emerged as one of England's most influential players since he was handed his international debut in the 2-0 victory against Ukraine in May 2000. He was inspirational during Liverpool's shock Champions League triumph last term and has again played a key role this term. Missed the 2002 World Cup after being forced to have surgery on a groin problem and struggled to find his best form at Euro 2004 after gifting a goal to France in the opening group match. Gerrard missed part of the 2004-05 season after suffering a broken metatarsal and opted to stay at Anfield rather than move to Chelsea last summer.
