The Manchester United star is England's jewel in the crown but injury may stop him from building on the impact he made in Portugal two years ago. Rooney scored two goals against both Switzerland and Croatia before limping out of the quarter-final defeat to the host nation. He made his international debut while still only 17 in the ill-fated friendly defeat to Australia in February 2003 and has gone on to produce spectacular and powerful displays on a regular basis for his country. However, the metatarsal injury he suffered in United's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea in April looks like keeping him out of the action in Germany.
