Alex Tachie-Mensah has barely featured for the Black Stars since making his international debut in 2002 and was another surprise name in Ratomir Dujkovic's World Cup squad. Like many of the Ghanaian players heading to Germany 2006, the 28-year-old benefited from not being involved in the African Cup of Nations at the start of the year, with the country's poor displays in Egypt opening doors for those overlooked for the tournament. The centre-forward also helped to secure his place in the squad with a solid campaign for Swiss Super League side St Gallen, scoring 12 times in 33 appearances. Tachie-Mensah joined St Gallen in March 2002, having had spells with Neuchatel Xamax and Dwarfs earlier in his career.
