AZ Alkmaar captain Denny Landzaat has finally established himself as a key member of the national team since Marco van Basten took charge after Euro 2004. He made his international debut in June 2001 as a substitute in a 4-2 win against Estonia, but had to wait until the qualifying campaign for Germany 2006 to became a regular starter for the Oranje. A product of the Ajax youth system, Landzaat had spells with MVV and Willem II before joining AZ in 2004 and helping to transform the club in to genuine Eredivisie title challengers. The goalscoring midfielder usually plays in a central role for AZ, but van Basten prefers to use him on the right wing to capitalise on his crossing ability.
