Alessandro Nesta has established a reputation as one of the world's best centre-backs since making his international debut in 1996 and remains an integral part of Marcello Lippi's plans for the World Cup. His partnership with skipper Fabio Cannavaro will be crucial to the Azzurri's hopes of ending their disappointing run in major tournaments, despite both of them showing signs that their best may be behind them. Nesta made his name with his hometown club Lazio, helping them to win the Serie A title in 2000 and the 1999 European Cup Winners' Cup. He joined AC Milan in a 30 million euros deal in 2002 and has since added the 2003 Champions League and the 2004 Serie A title to his collection of winner's medals.
