Angelo Peruzzi will be hoping his major tournament jinx does not strike again in Germany. He was Italy's first-choice goalkeeper for the disastrous Euro '96 campaign before missing both France '98 and Euro 2000 after suffering injuries shortly before the start of the tournaments. Peruzzi ended a self-imposed exile from the national squad to act as Gianluigi Buffon's understudy for the Azzurri's disappointing Euro 2004 campaign. He has retained that role during Marcello Lippi's reign and started three qualifiers while Buffon was sidelined by a shoulder injury. The 36-year-old has, though, experienced greater success at club level, collecting three Serie A and one Champions League winner's medals during a career that saw him play for Roma, Juventus and Internazionale before joining Lazio in 2000.
