Luca Toni found the target four times to finish as Italy's leading scorer during the qualifying campaign, despite starting just two of the ten matches. The physically imposing striker scored the decisive late goal as the Azzurri came from behind to win their first Group 5 game against Norway 2-1, before firing a hat-trick in the 4-1 win in Belarus. Toni earned his first call in to the national squad in August 2004 by scoring 30 times for Palermo as they won the 2003-04 Serie B title. He followed that up with 20 Serie A goals the next season, with his form securing a 10 million euros move to Fiorentina, where he has averaged just under a goal a game this term.
