Marco Materazzi had to make his way up from the lower rungs of Italian professional football to establish himself as a regular member of the national squad. He made his name with Serie C1 side Trapani before going on to have two spells with Perugia, either side of a disappointing one-season stint in England with Everton. The ruthless central defender joined Internazionale in a 10.5million euros deal in 2001, the same year as he made his international debut, and has remained an important figure for club and country ever since. The 32-year-old will provide cover for Fabio Cannavaro and Alessandro Nesta in Germany, as well as ensuring there is one member of the squad well-versed in the traditional dark arts of Italian defending.
