A Paris-born utility player, Guy Demel will provide cover for the Elephants across midfield and defence this summer. He featured just three times during World Cup qualifying and only once at the 2006 African Cup of Nations, but his versatility ensured his place in Henri Michel's squad for Germany 2006 was never in doubt. Demel began his career with French side Nimes before joining Arsenal in 2001. He failed to make an impact as a defensive midfielder at Highbury and moved on to Borussia Dortmund the following year. He struggled to establish himself as a regular in Borussia's starting line-up and in the summer of 2005 was allowed to join Hamburg, where he is now first choice right-back.
