Twenty-two-year-old Lopez was called up by coach Anibal Ruiz after veteran Jose Cardozo was ruled out of the tournament with a calf injury. He currently plays his club football in the Italian lower leagues with Genoa, having earlier had spells with Olimpia Asuncion, Nacional, Cordoba, Maccabi Haifa and Cerro Porteno. Yet to make his international debut as is likely only to be used if either Nelson Valdez or Roque Santa Cruz suffer injury problems.
