Right-back or central defender who has collected a handful of international caps after making the step up from captaining the Portugal Under-21 side in the late 1990s. Currently on loan at Sporting Lisbon from Spanish club Valencia, he is another possibly viewed by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari as an option off the bench should anything happen to his first-choice back four. Caneira has often been employed as a right-back at Sporting as a lack of height makes him prone to losing aerial battles when placed at the heart of the defence.
