Hard-working striker who has been capped more than 50 times at international level. The 29-year-old has never been regarded as the most prolific of marksmen, but enjoyed a fine Euro 2000 which led to a £12million move to Fiorentina. Gomes is now back with Benfica and his goals fired the Portuguese club to both the domestic title last year and their somewhat surprise progression to the latter stages of the Champions League this year. Has something of a short fuse and received a seven-month international ban after pushing referee Gunter Benko following Portugal's semi-final defeat by France in Euro 2000.
