A Portuguese league, UEFA Cup and Champions League winner with Porto who followed coach Jose Mourinho to Chelsea for £19.8million in the summer of 2004 after an outstanding display during the European Championships. Tall and athletic, he is the identikit central defender for the modern era with the ability to win the ball with ease and pick out a team-mate with a range of passes. Carvalho was a rock in the Chelsea defence as Mourinho's team won the 2004-05 Premiership title, but a public spat with his coach led to a spell on the sidelines during the first half of this season. Voted the best central defender in the Champions League during the 2003/04 season.
