Regarded as one of the best players in Portuguese football, Simao led by example in captaining Benfica to the league title last year and scoring 15 goals in the process. His performances last term reached such heights that he was courted by a host of Premiership clubs and he almost signed for Liverpool, only for Benfica to have a last-minute change of heart. Simao missed out on the 2002 World Cup through injury but played in Euro 2004 and has since cemented his place in the national team.
