The leader of Serbia & Montenegro's famously frugal defence, Mladen Krstajic will have a huge role to play if they are to progress from the group stage. The 32-year-old marshalled the 'famous four' backline with great authority as they conceded just one goal in 10 matches during the qualifying campaign to ensure they topped their group ahead of Spain. His composed defending was no surprise to fans of Partizan Belgrade, Werder Bremen and Schalke 04. Krstajic picked up three domestic title winners' medals during a five-year spell with Partizan before joining Bremen in 2000. He gained a reputation as one of Europe's leading defenders by starring in Werder's double winning season of 2003-04 before moving on to their Bundesliga rivals Schalke that summer.
