The Valencia goalkeeper missed the 2002 World Cup Finals when he severed a tendon in his right foot after accidentally smashing a bottle of aftershave and a shard of glass penetrated his flesh. He had been expected to be first-choice shot-stopper in Japan and South Korea but is likely to be behind Iker Casillas and Jose Reina this time. The 36-year-old has enjoyed a successful season with a revitalised Valencia this term though and will provide experienced back-up. He made his international debut 13 years ago and, after coming through the Real Madrid youth academy, Canizares played for Celta Vigo before returning to Real. He has spent the last eight years at the Mestalla.
