The 29-year-old has been a regular in the Sweden midfield alongside Freddie Ljungberg recently and is a veteran of the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004. He impressed during his four seasons with Southampton following his £500,000 transfer from Elfsborg and scored ten goals in his 127 league matches for the Saints. However, following Southampton's relegation from the Premiership at the end of the 2004-05 campaign, he returned to Elfsborg on a free transfer. Svensson made his international debut against South Africa in 1999 and scored a memorable goal in the 2002 World Cup against Argentina.
