The Aston Villa defender has been one of Sweden's most reliable performers since taking over the captain's armband from Johan Mjallby before Euro 2004. The 28-year-old has also been one of Villa's most consistent players in his five seasons with the club since his transfer from Racing Santander. Mellberg has made almost 200 appearances for the Premiership side and recently won his 50th cap for his country. He came through the youth team ranks at Degerfors before making his name with AIK Solna and moving to Spain with Racing Santander in 1999. Mellberg made his international debut one year later against Italy.
